Inpatient and Outpatient Parvo Treatments
What is Parvo?
Parvovirus enteritis is a highly contagious virus in dogs that has the potential to cause severe illness and even death. Commonly called ‘Parvo’, it spreads quickly and easily among dogs. The infection can be passed from an infected dog to another dog through direct contact or indirectly from something contaminated by the virus, even if it is cleaned up. This is because the virus is extremely tough and stays in the environment for a long time.
Parvo symptoms
This virus lives in the intestines and blood. It damages the heart muscle and GI tract of puppies and dogs. Without proper preventative care, it can be deadly.
Symptoms include:
- Dehydration
- Weakness and fatigue
- Lack of appetite
- Fever
- Vomiting and diarrhea
Severe Cases include:
- Darker gums
- Weak pulse
- Racing heart rate
- Signs of hypothermia
Parvovirus starts quickly, with symptoms appearing in as little as 5-7 days.
Inhouse Treatment
There is not a drug to cure parvovirus in dogs but with early, aggressive treatment and intensive nursing care, dogs have a greater chance of survival.
Treatments include:
- IV fluids to treat dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
- Pain medication
- Antibiotics to treat related infections
- Medication for nausea
- Blood transfusion
- Nutritional support my tube feeding
Outpatient Treatment
For owners of pets who are deemed good candidates for OP treatment and dedicated to the task of transporting their pet to the clinic for several days of veterinarian-based OP care, our OP protocol can be a possible alternative to hospitalization. Inhouse treatment may be required for severe cases to stabilize the patient before sending home with OP medications and treatment.
- Pain medication
- Antibiotics for secondary infections
- Syringe feeding
- Nausea medication
- Regular temperature checks
