Transfusion therapy has become crucial in emergency veterinary medicine, as it can save the lives of pets in need of immediate treatment.

For the purposes of transfusion medicine, blood or blood products are administered to patients who are deficient in one of those products. A deficiency is determined by lab results and a combination of the patient’s history and physical exam.

Individuals should be mindful of the proper steps that go into providing a safe transfusion. The first step is to identify the type of blood product(s) that will be transfused, along with cross-matching and typing the recipient’s blood. Ideally, underlying diseases should also be considered, along with administration of medications to decrease the risk of complications during a transfusion.

Transfusion Products

There are two commonly used products for transfusion in veterinary care. One is packed RBCs, and the other is FFP. Packed RBCs are processed by removing the plasma prior to storage while Fresh Frozen Plasma is a frozen substance containing the clotting factors, but not the cells that so readily die post donation. These are the most common products used to reduce the effects of an allergic reaction. However, there are other variations of these products that are available commercially.

Animal blood transfusions are administered to help compromised animals. Co-administered with appropriate medications and protocol, transfusions can be used to enhance existing therapies, facilitate rejuvenation, and increase chances of survival.
